A few days ago, I was reminiscing with a fellow fan of Buffy and Angel, remembering the "good old days" the time when we had weekly Friday night chats, talked endlessly on the Babble board, and just pretty much hung out together because we had so much fun talking, joking and going to the gutter.
Since that conversation, I have thought a lot about the people that I met on the internet because of my BTVS obsession and I realized how special that time was and how incredible the experience was for me, not only as a fan but as an individual. I've been thinking about the relationships that were built and have lasted through the years and I'm really just wondering where everyone is now, what they are doing. How are they? I think it would be cool to call everyone back for a group hug and a catch up session. I'd like to know where Kendra is and if she ever became a journalist. Where is Shawnie and what is the Godfather doing? I'm sure it is something interesting and exciting. Margot LeFaye…has she written and published that novel we all know is within her to accomplish? I got a Christmas card from Tara but I haven't spoken to her in years. WHAT is she doing now? How does she spend her Friday nights since we no longer do the chat?
I was wondering about Kaity but she actually materialized out of thin air the other day and I got to talk to her for a few minutes, which was so cool.
Ruth too! She came by to wish Blade a Happy Birthday. The stories I could tell you about Ruth and I at The WB and our endless fight.
Those are just a few of the people that I am wondering about. Would love to hear from. You don't realize how much people will be missed until they are gone. I know what some of my favorite moments from that time are, whether it be funny moments like a certain and sweet Comic fan rolling up poop balls and feeding them to a certain faction of the fandom during a chat session. Or the hilarious rants of the Blade Killer. Cathy's never ending whit, sarcasm and humor all rolled into one. She nearly killed me all those years ago at THE WB. I have never laughed so hard in my life and doubt that I ever will.
Sometimes the memories are more profound and were down right dripped with chilling inspirational messages. Lucinda and her connections comes to mind, as well as the insight into story given by Carlos. Margot was always quick to get right to the heart of the matter and what could I possibly say about the four horsemen? Inspiring. Chilling. Pivotal.
Then we have the creative and wonderful fanfic writers….Ducks, Tara, Margot, Kendra, etc… OR the insanely talented KT, whose Buffy and Angel vids rocked your socks off.
During this journey down memory lane, you can't help but to wonder which memories are everyone else's favorite. What did other people find inspiring? Which fans that stood beside them have changed their life? What are your favorite memories?
Some of mine will always be wrapped up in THE WB, The Babble Board and The Haven. The time that we raised enough money for an ad in less than 5 hours. Every time I saw one of our ads in print or the times that we gathered together to campaign. Everyone's efforts during the Saving Angel campaign. I think I have a million experiences I could share that mean a whole lot to me. I'd really like to know if those people who inspired me so long ago feel the same way. Was it as special for them as for me? What do YOU miss the most from those days?
Because of this love I feel for our fandom, specifically all my fellow B/A fans, below are some questions, if you wouldn't mind taking the time to stop and remember with me. I would really appreciate hearing others talk out about their experience.
1. What was your first board membership?
2. Who is your favorite fanfic writer? Or top 3 or 5. I know there are
so many that it's hard to choose.
3. What was the most inspiring thing that you ever saw happen in the fandom?
4. Which fans inspired you the most? Why?
5. What have you been doing lately? Have you become apart of another online fandom? If yes, which ones?
6. If there was just one thing that we could recapture from that time, what would it be?
7. What moments would you like to share, that meant a lot to you as a fan?
