Heh. You guys are great. Blade babe, you never fail to crack me up when what I previously wanted to do was throw my computer and television out the window in the absolute impotent rage and disgust of it all.

Unfettered, unreasonable Spike love swallowed the show, its heroine, and the fandom whole. And ME just loves it.

I too loved Old Spike. I think my fic makes that pretty damned clear. In fact, he was pretty much the ONLY reason I kept watching seasons 4 & 5. But as soon as he and Buffy pursued a "relationship" (train crash? car wreck? apocalypse?), he became the most offensive, obnoxious, tedious thing since... well... the only thing I can think of right now is President W. the Nazi Monkey Boy. *G* But that's neither here nor there.

The devolution of Spike seems to me to be a symptom, rather than an absolute cause (or maybe a little bit of both) of the show-killing suck. It's been more than readily apparent that the writers have absolutely no idea what to do with most of the characters anymore -- including the heroine. And so they had to move friggin' mountains to keep Spike around, since he came with his own fanbase and more or less blank background. Frankly, he's a walking plothole himself, since I have *never* been convinced by any of the lameass arguments for not staking him when he's betrayed, lied to, and tried to kill the Scoobs so many times over the years it's difficult to count. Rape, however, is a line *I* as a viewer am not willing to cross. Especially when ME has so childishly trivialized it as "not important, cuz, you know... Buffy and Spike aren't, like, real people and stuff. So it's not relevant. And besides -- cheekbones! Soul!" It's all bullshit. ME failed to sell it, and by using rape as a chintzy plot devise to cover up their own shoddy half-assed writing, they pretty much guaranteed that they CAN'T sell it to me. And poor Buffy lost her place in my hero pantheon as a result. It's sad, really, especially considering how mindnumbingly boring Angel 2.0 is.
